GOOGLE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF SEARCH

The Country Director, Google Nigeria, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor says the social and economic tool known as Google Search has attained 20 years.
Ms Ehimuan-Chiazor in a statement in Lagos said that apart from Google Search being a way of finding information, it had proven invaluable in helping people find jobs, start businesses, and even save money.
“This month marks a major milestone for the world’s most popular search engine, as Google Search turns 20.
“Founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, with the aim of organizing the world’s information to make it universally accessible and useful, the Search Index now contains hundreds of billions of web pages and is well over 100 000 000 gigabytes in size.
“It is by some distance, the world’s number one search engine. This is in no small part, thanks to its efforts to ensure that users can instantly access information that is contextually relevant to them and their surroundings.
“From humble origins in a Stanford University computer lab, Search has evolved to become a vital part of most people’s lives.
“People use it for everything ‒ from looking at the weather to plan their outfit the next day, to searching for life-saving procedures in the middle of a medical emergency.
“Search is a very different product from what it was in 1998, far from simply being a way to find information; it has become a crucial social and economic tool.
“This is especially true in Africa, where it has proven invaluable in helping people find jobs, start businesses, and even save money,” she said.
The country director said even though technology had changed, people’s tastes have remained largely consistent over the past decade, considering the most searched for people on Google in Nigeria since 2008 with many of them still relevant today.
She listed some of them as: Linda Ikeji, Wizkid, Olamide, Muhammadu Buhari, Davido, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Phyno.
She said that in Nigeria, Google was constantly working on giving people the best possible search experience, listing the latest efforts to include Google Go, Job Search, Recipe Search and Health Symptoms Search.
She also listed some fast facts on search saying in 2017, Google launched more than 270,000 experiments and made more than 2, 400 improvements to its algorithms, and continued to launch new features to make search more useful for everyone.
“When Google began, a new index was rolled out roughly every month. Today, Google generally indexes popular content from news sites and blogs within seconds or minutes of publication. For more static content, Google still updates a large fraction of its index every few days
“15 per cent of searches every day are new, more than half of searches come from outside the U. S., Brazil, India and Indonesia are in the top 10 countries with the highest search volume.
“Nearly one-third of searches came from Next Billion User (NBU) countries like Indonesia, India, Nigeria and South Africa in 2017 and 20 per cent of users in NBU countries search in two or more languages.
“The Knowledge Graph is available in 46 languages: English, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (LatAm), French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Korean, Polish, Turkish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Hebrew and others.
“Every year, there are trillions of searches on Google and over half of those searches happen on mobile and Google has indexed over 130 trillion web addresses so far.
“The Knowledge Graph maps out how more than 1 billion things in the real world are connected, and offers over 70 billion facts about them and Google’s average query response time is roughly a quarter of a second.
“Looking forward, there’s little doubt that the evolution of Search over the next 20 years will be as dramatic as the past 20, and with an online population of 103 million, there’s every chance that Nigeria will be at the forefront of that evolution,” she said.

NIGERIAN INDUSTRY LEADERS DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES OF INTERNET SERVICE AT THE 2017 BD BROADBAND SUMMIT

Business Day, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Communications, the Nigerian Communications Commission, MainOne and a host of private and public entities in the ICT space, came together on Friday June 2nd, 2017, to discuss the theme - Broadband As An Enabler Of Economic Growth.

A few of the notable speakers at the summit were:
  • Dr. Omobola Johnson - Chair for the Alliance for Affordable Internet
  • Hon. Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu - Minister of Communication Technology
  • Mr. Olusola Teniola - President of ATCON
  • Mr. Tunde Coker - Managing Director of Rack Centre
  • Mrs. Adesimbo Ukiri - Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Avon Healthcare Limited
A recurring note throughout the summit was the need for increased penetration in the market through affordable pricing and higher quality.

Each speaker had much to say regarding the day's theme, here are a few of the ideas presented:

  •  Dr. Omobola Johnson emphasized the need for broadband internet to be affordable in order to grow the Nigerian economy
    • Affordable broadband service is a hallmark of all developed countries, with internet being classified as a utility on par with water and electricity
  •  Mr. Tunde Coker suggested building a Nigerian cloud
    • Cloud computing centres are an efficient way of storing large amounts of data, but they present regulatory challenges and privacy concerns. Many countries have tackled these challenges and set up these data centres, however Nigeria is yet to follow suit, meaning valuable Nigerian data is being stored in unregulated data centres in the country or in cloud computing centres outside our borders
  • Mrs. Adesimbo Ukiri noted the effect of the current state of broadband in Nigeria on HMO providers, stating that more affordable broadband will make scaling services from corporations to individuals possible
    • Since most HMO providers only serve corporations, the high number of self employed Nigerians are left with little or no access to quality healthcare facilities. It is a well known fact that a healthy population is a boost to any nation's economy, and reduces strain on resources. Broadband affordability is essential to growing the healthcare industry and in turn, growing the Nigerian economy.

THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF TELEVISION

1927 Newspaper article announcing advent of Television

Television has been a staple in the lives of the majority of people for over 100 years, speedily overtaking radio as the main source of news and entertainment worldwide. Let's take a quick look at how TV has evolved over the years.

BLACK-AND-WHITE TELEVISION

Early television sets required a lot of space

Televisions first became commercially available in most parts of the world in black-and-white. The first TV stations broadcast programming without colour, and from 1936 to 1967, most people only had black-and-white TVs. Interestingly, the one exception is South Africa - where the first TV station in the country began its service in 1975 with fully colour broadcasts.

While black-and-white was the more commercially available type of TV, various companies were working on reinventing the available technology to revolutionise entertainment.

COLOUR TELEVISION

Even with colour technology, TVs were still bulky

The revolution took some time though, the technology to transmit colour images had been available since 1908 when inventor Hovannes Adamian patented the first colour television project. Many inventors worked for decades on creating more practical designs and by 1953, colour televisions became available in the United States. However, these first colour TVs were very expensive, and most stations were still broadcasting in black-and-white, making colour TV a luxury that most people could not justify purchasing.

In the meantime, film makers were taking advantage of the new colour technology to create full colour films that drew multitudes to cinemas. Cinema-goers raved over colour and were eager for more colour TV programming.

TV stations began broadcasting in colour, phasing out black-and-white TV

The popularity of colour films sped up the revolution from black-and-white to colour television. More and more stations began broadcasting in colour, making it more practical to purchase a colour TV, and by the 1980s black-and-white TV transmissions were a thing of the past.

As time went on, more people switched to colour televisions at home, however, there was a new revolution coming. Inventors were researching and developing more compact display methods with the aim of increasing screen size and bringing home the cinema experience.

LCD, LED AND PLASMA TELEVISIONS

Flat panel televisions greatly minimised space requirements and maximised screen sizes

The early black-and-white and colour televisions were extremely bulky, the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology on which they were designed required a lot of space, making it difficult to increase the size of your TV screen without occupying a large portion of your home.

As early as 1964, LCD and Plasma televisions had been built by different inventors and by 1977 the first LED television was developed by J.P. Mitchell. Soon corporations like Sharp, started to mass produce televisions using this technology. The Crystaltron from Sharp was launched in 1988, as the first LCD television.

As competition picked up, and more companies started to produce their own flat-panel display models, CRT televisions were made obsolete. However, as history always proves, progress never ends and a new revolution is at hand.

SMART TELEVISION

Like smartphones, Smart TVs allow you to access internet content on your TV

As computing systems evolved, technology innovators have found new ways to deliver advanced computing technology in different packages. The television is no exception. As early as 1994, a patent was filed for a smart TV predecessor that would be linked with data processing systems. Now in 2017, every major electronics manufacturer has a Smart TV brand on the market. The advantage of this new widely available technology is the ability to access the internet from your television.

At this point, Smart TVs are still quite expensive, and are yet to overtake LED televisions in sales. It appears that we are now standing at the edge of another revolution in TV. Will Smart TVs become the new household staple, making regular LED TVs obsolete?

If you have any additions to our brief history of television, share them in the comments.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST ALTERNATIVE TO PAY-TV

About two years ago, a major paid TV company in Nigeria, increased its subscription prices across all platforms, leading many to protest and seek alternatives. Two years later, that company continues to lead the market in the Nigerian Pay-TV industry, while continuing to increase its subscription prices almost on a yearly basis.
This post is going to outline the best options that address the 3 major challenges of cable and satellite TV:

  1.  High subscription prices
  2.  Complicated installation
  3.   Lack of portability

High subscription prices

The best alternative to high subscription prices is to get rid of them completely. Is that really possible? Let’s take a look at some options that help you bypass subscription prices:

a.       Internet:

Many people are choosing to get all their entertainment from the internet these days.

        Pros:

      1. Infinite content
      2. Accessible anywhere

                          Cons:

      1. Data costs

b.      Decoders:

There are so many decoders on the market right now that give you access to about 10 to 20 free to air channels.

        Pros:

      1. Low price
      2. No subscription fee
      3. Ability to pause and record live TV

                          Cons:

      1.  Limited channel list

c.       IPTV Set Top Box:

Just like decoders, IPTV boxes are flooding the market. They allow you to view internet content on your TV.

        Pros:

      1. Massive content library
      2. Subscription not required to enjoy content

                          Cons:

      1. Data costs

Complicated Installation

With Pay TV there is usually an installation fee, since the equipment is so complicated to install on your own. What are your options if you want to avoid this fee?

a.       IPTV Set Top Box:

      Pros:

      1. Simple to install
      2. Easy user interface

      Cons:

IPTV boxes are usually plug and play, so there aren't really any disadvantages when it comes to installation.

b.      Decoders:

As we discussed above, decoders have similar features to the top Pay TV companies’ decoders at a fraction of the price.

      Pros:

      1. Low installation fee
      2. You're free to choose your preferred technician

      Cons:

      1. Time spent searching for the right technician

     Lack of portability:

Your Pay TV equipment is set up to work in the location in your home where it was initially installed and nowhere else. To move it, you need to contact the company to have it reinstalled in a new location. Most companies realize that their customers are on the go, now, more than ever, and have developed apps that are accessible with the paid subscription. But we’re trying to lose that subscription, so what options do we have?

a.       IPTV Set Top Box:

Like we mentioned before, these boxes are plug and play, so if you travel, you can take the box with you and connect it to the TV in your new location.

      Pros:

      1. Easy to set up in any location
      2. Easily portable

      Cons:

      1. Server access may be interrupted depending on your location

Did you notice? IPTV Set Top Boxes are the only option that stand up to all 3 challenges.

However, they are not without their own challenges, which is why Omovo Technologies Limited designed the Omovo TV Hybrid Entertainment Box. It combines IPTV and Satellite technology in an affordable package to help you truly break free from the challenges of Pay TV.
